We were watching a TV show about turbines tonight, and Thorsten reminded me of this letter that a friend of his e-mailed us a few years ago. I still find it hilariously funny. Scroll down for my amateur translation of the letter and the reply from the turbine manufacturer . . .

Fahrzeug unwarscheinlich schnell beschleunigt.

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
Two weeks ago I saw the new Batman film and I was totally enthusiastic about it. What a great guy, I tell you; you should also see the film. Since then I’ve had a costume made and I look great in it.
However, now I have a problem that maybe you could help me with. Batman had a really crazy car. Since I’m an old car junkie, I’d like to build myself a car like that. With the body and platform I wouldn’t have any problem, I don’t think. Also not with the motor; I’d take an old Porsche motor with about 320 horsepower. But this Batman car also had a turbine built in, that accelerated it incredibly. Holy moly, when the turbine is turned on, then it really takes off! A friend of mine that I happened to meet, and who worked for a few years at Messerschmidt, Bölkow and Blom because he’s an aerospace engineer, told me that you make such turbines.
Now I thought that I’d write to you, and ask politely if you could send me such a thing and how much it costs. Maybe somewhere you have a used turbine laying around, that would suit me too, although it should be functioning because a broken one won’t help me out. I would also have to know how big such a turbine is, it should probably be one of the smaller models, so that it would fit in a car. I would really like to have one, let’s say, about a meter long and with a diameter of 40 cm. In any case, it shouldn’t be too big, one should be able to build it in the car. It’s also important that it should have a long trail of fire that comes out the back, because optically that looks remarkably good.
I’d like to start with the car construction as soon as possible and would be very thankful to you if you could tell me when you could deliver such a turbine, so that I can already start planning.
With friendly greetings,
Jürgen xxx.

Sehr geehrter Herr Sxxxxxxxr,

Dear Mr. X,
We build airplane turbines from 20 cm diameter up to 2.50 meters in diameter. The smallest turbine weighs about 75 kg, delivers over 420 horsepower, and although it doesn’t have a trail of fire, it gulps about 150 L of kerosene per hour.
A larger turbine with about 2.50 meters diameter weighs about 3.5 tons, gulps about 5,500 L per hour and produces—although with an invisible exhaust train—about 30 tons of thrust. For this turbine, the auto platform and tank probably aren’t sufficient. Other people build a couple of metal sheets and a couple of wheels on this turbine and then call it an “airplane”.
In our product selection, however, there are a few turbines that grind and crack quite nicely. And with an afterburner, it kicks out not only a murderous trail of fire, sometimes one can even see sparks. A thing like that has about a 70 cm diameter, weighs about 1.7 tons, and propels the machine that one builds around it with about 8.2 tons of thrust. However, the fuel requirement is also immense, so that for 2 hours’ operation one needs about half a tanker trunk of fuel. In addition, we are afraid that such a turbine, even if it only runs for a few seconds so that it blazes fire, would reach the target before the driver and his vehicle. Although even Batman couldn't keep up with such a thing. He would look pretty old and would be left lying in the dust.
With friendly greetings,
